Narrative outline
Our narrative is about an ordinary working class girl who was saving up her money to buy an expensive designer dress in order to fulful her ambition of looking like a clebrity. The story would be told backwards. There will be shown many ways in which she could have got the money to buy the dress but the audience will never find out if she got the money in a good or bad way. At the beginning of this short film you will see her coming home from daily jog working in a café . We see that she dosent really have a good relationship with her mum. We understand that shes fasinated by celebrity culture and longs to look like her idol. We see the amount of depression she is under and as a result the only esy of feeling in control is through self harming. There will not be much diologue within this short film however most of this characters thoughts will be told through her diary.
Target Audience
The target audience for this piece is aimed at teens and people that are in their early 20’s of whom are males and females. We will target this audience through the narrative as the age group we are targeting are often trying to attract the opposite sex, therefor they will be able to relate to the main character and her story. The target audience will also be able to relate to the charcters featured in this short film as the actor and actress used are young. We would also like to attract working class people, as the narrative brings up the issue of trying to make ends meat and the difficulties people face. This short film also deals with sterotypes, as an audience we start to believe that she has managed to pay for the dress by doing something that is illegal and almost in a way assuming that people that have lower statuses in society will commit to crime in order to get what they want or need.
Funding
We will seek funding from UK FILM|COUNCIL and Film 4 as they have funded other girtty realist short films. Cinema Extreme was launched in 2002 and is well established, it merges both the UK Film Council and Film4 together as they are joint funders of the programme. There are many established filmamkers who have used this scheme and managed to get far and even gone on to win awards such as Andrea Anorld. We have looked at several of her films and they have the same style of filmaking we wish to use. Her films tend to deal with issues that happen to working class people. It usually shows you the struggles the characters go through. What we’ve noticed about her work is it usually focuses on the female character who never really fits in with the rest of society. Wasp and Fish Tank really explore this idea. The New Cinema fund of the UK Film Council will continue to fund short film makers like ourselves through shcemes such as Digital Shorts, Digital Nation, Completion Fund and helping and supporting virgin shorts competition. The UK Film Council and Film4 will continue to work together to support new talent and short film makers, and Film4 remains committed to developing and funding short film making talent through its development budget.
Visual style
Our visual style is going to be really girtty and realist really creating the image of a working class female trying to provide for herself and trying to fit in with the norm. We will put a grain effect over our final piece, brightness and contrast will be played with to make the film come accross as very dark. The lighting will have a yellow tone to it creating a very dingy darkl style to this British short film. Locations that will be used in order to help build up this image is a greasy cafe, a flat, a pub etc which really help create this image of how the working class live and the extent of how far they travel in life. There life is just being sourounded and being in locations like this. They dont ever explore outside of these locations connoting in a way that their trapped, it’s like a cintinues cycle.
Exhibition
We will be using Sun Dance to exhibite are work as they help aspiring filmmakers to showcase their films. It allows major studios to view peoples work that they wouldn't usually looked twice at. The result of this usually means major studios will spend millions on these films through word of mouth from Sun Dance. When talking about this festival its like talking about x factor but the difference is it's a festival for people trying to produce good film. Many major studios will send scouts to look for the next big thing there, so it's worth submitting your work. If there work isn't brought by these being company's or producers the festival will then help these film makers by allowing them to use their sources which will help develop their work and make it better.
